Coat~of~Arms History

Originally used as a means of identifying knights in battle, the coat of arms serves to distinguish families, corporations, and even states and nations. The elements of a coat of arms draw on a rich vocabulary of symbols that are used to represent the identity of the bearer with accuracy and pride.

The Gauthier Coat of Arms illustrated above was drawn by an heraldic artist from information officially recorded in ancient heraldic archives. Documentation for the Gauthier Coat of Arms design can be found in BURKE'S GENERAL ARMONRY. Heraldic artists of old developed their own unique language to describe an individual Coat of Arms. In their language, the ARMS (shield) is as follows:

"Aux 1 et 4 tierce en face d' or, d'argt et de gu.

Cq. cour. 2 et 3 az a lion rampant arg."

Above the shield and helmet is the Crest, which is described as:

"Un aigle ep. de sa."

When translated the blazon also describes the original colors of the Gauthier Arms and Crest as it appeared centuries ago.

Family mottoes are believed to have originated as battle cries in medieval times. A motto was not recorded with this Gauthier Coat of Arms.

Notes for JEFFERSON (CHARETTE) CARTER: Jefferson Carter By the year 1850 Upper Canada had a much greater population than Lower Canada, and there were many differences that were unable to be resolved by the Legislative Body that was established through the Union Act of 1840. The sectional differences form Upper and Lower Canada continued in the years to follow. The decade of the 1850's was also full of unrest in the United States. The question of slavery was quickly dividing the country, North & South. Jefferson Carter was born on May 4, 1854 in St. Eustache. At the age of 21 a young Jefferson joined his brothers Joseph and Adolphe, as they moved south to AuSable Forks, New York to take on jobs working in the mines. Jefferson met his first wife Emma Dahan and they were married in AuSable. Jefferson and Emma had three children, Julia, Adeline, and Jefferson. Emma Carter died while the children were very young. Jefferson then married Amelia Gokey from Hammondsville, N.Y. In 1883 Jefferson and Amelia moved to Bridgewater, Vt.Jeffersons brothers followed him to Bridgewater and they worked in the mills. Jefferson was able to borrow $800.00 from a man named Frank Mc Kenzie and he bought a farm next to the mill. He established a business of providing firewood for the mill. Childhood illnesses took the lives of Jefferson and Adeline, but Amelia and Jefferson had eight children of their own. They were Florence, Clementine, Dora, Nellie, Gladys, Aldridge, Beatrice, and Francis. Before his death Jefferson sold off much of the farm. He died on January 14th, 1910 and is buried in the family plot in Bridgewater, Vermont. Amelia later meet and married a man, Luke Paro and they settled in Winchendon, Massachusetts.

History

The patronymic name Gauthier comes from a person's name of German origin "Waldhari" (Wald, from "Waldan" which means "to govern" and hari "armed"). There are different branches of the Gauthier families of Quebec, but not all have left direct descendant lines. Detailed herewith are the main nine branches.

On October 24th, 1663, Joseph-Elie Gauthier, son of Samuel Gauthier and Hilaire Courlatier, of Notre Dame de Celles-sur-Belle in Poitiers, Poitou, married Marguerite Martin, a daughter of the King, and settled in the Saint'Famille parish on theLle d' Orleands. Their sons Andre and Jacques carried the name. Rene Gauthier, Sir of Varennes, son of Adam-Rene Gauthier, Sir of La Varandiere and Bertrande Gourdeau, of Becon-les-Gravits in Angers, Anjou, got married on June 4th, 1667, to Marie Boucher. In 1668 he was named governor of Trois Riviers. Their sons Jacques-Rene, Sir of Varennes and Pierre, Sir of Boumois and of La Verandrye carried the name. Pierre Gauthier called Sanguingoira, son of Jacques Gauthier and Marie Boucher, of Rochefort in Saintes, Saintonge, married on November 12th, 1668, to Charlotte Roussel and settled in Lachine. Their sons Jean, Joseph, Jean-Baptiste and Francois called Sanguingoira carried the name. Mathurin Gauthier called Landreville, son of Pierre Gauthier and Anne Lemaistre from Lege in Nantes, Bretagne, and married toweards 1671 to Nicole Philippeau, a daughter of the King, and settled in Sainte-Therese Island. Their sons Louis, Charles, Jean and Lambert called Landreville carried the name.

Jean Gauthier, son of Gabriel Gauthier and Jeanne Chandauvouenne of Saintes in Saintonge, married on November 26th, 1671, to Jeanne Petit and settled in Cap-de-la-Madeleine. Their sons Jean, Jacques and Joseph carried the name. The descendants of Jean adopted the last name of Gentes in honor of their descendant Angelique Gentes. Jacques Gauthier, son of Simon Gauthier and Marie Aube of Saint-Vivien in Rouen, Normandie, married on September 11th, 1672, to Elisabeth-Ursule Denevers and settled in Lothiniere. Their sons Francois, Joseph, Augustin, Jean-Baptiste, Etienne and Jacques carried the name. Germain Gauthier called Saint-Germain, son of Germain Gauthier and Louise Vieillard of Beauber-la-Rosiere in Rouen, Normandie, married on July 19th, 1672, to Jeanne Beauchamps and settled in Repentigny. Their sons Jean, Pierre, Francois, Jacques and Pierre-Joseph called Saint-Germain, carried the name. Jean Gauthier called Larouche, son of Mathurin Gauthier and Catherine Loumeaus of Echillais de Rochefort in Saintes, Saintonge, married on June 21st, 1675 to Angelique Lefebure and settled in the lower city of Quebec. Guillaume Gauthier called Delisle, of unknown origin, married on August 21st, 1723, to Marguerite Masse and settled in the Saint-Laurent parish of Montreal.

Nowadays, their descendants are settled throughout several regions of Quebec and they use the different spellings "Gathier" and "Gautier".

Gauthier
History from the RED DROUIN (volume No. 3)

The Gauthier family is one of the grand families to have taken root in New France which welcomed the arrival of settlers, pioneers, woodsmen, surgeons, administrators, pharmacists, makers of tools, cutlery, weavers, soldiers and priests. The Gauthiers had all these trades and more. These men and women whose ancient patronym is sometimes said to be the name of woodsmen, and at other times that of governors or chiefs came from all parts of France. They came via La Rochelle or Rochefort after having left the regions of Angoumois, Ile de France, Poitou, Artois, Normandy, Saintonge, Guyenne, Bourgogne, Aunis, Provence, Champagne, and Anjou.

They were more than thirty, men and women, the first bearing surnames, which sometimes replaced that of Gauthier. When they were soldiers, they had names like Francoeur, Frappe d`Abord, Labonté, Jolicoeur, Larose or Larouche. Their lands and villages gave them names like De Varennes, LaVérendry, Boisverdun, La Chenaye, Landreville, Delisle and Poitevin.Life gave them names withourt explanation, of which Saguingoira is the best example.

Because they came from all corners of France, they came to America, focussing on all areas of life. Some were explorers, reaching what would become the USA. Others, who stayed in New France, chose Quebec, Trois-Rivières, the Richelieu valley or that of the Saint Lawrence and also Montreal. Because they went everywhere, marrying all over, whose children took root everywhere, even marrying other Gauthis, it is difficult for their descendants official to link with one ancestor as opposed to another. Genealogists have been able to discover that Mathurin Gauthier dit Landreville, Jean Gauthier dit Larouche, Charles Gauthier dit Jolicoeur, Germain Gauthier dit Saint-Germain and Pierre Gauthier dit Saguingoira still have descendant, numbering in the thousands.

Of all these ancestors, Pierre Gauthier dit Saguingoira is certainly the one whose existence was the most tumultuous. Born around l629, in the village of Eschillais, close to Brouage, in Saintonge, he was the son of Jacques and Marie Boucher. Research by Alphonse Gauthier shows that it is impossible to determine the year of his arrival in Canada. In l668, he is among the residents of Lachine on land granted by the Seminary to Cavelier de LaSalle.

On 3 November, l668, holding land on which he can build his house, Pierre Gauthier «inhabiting in the Seigneurie de La Salle», 39 years old, marries Charlotte Roussel ou Rousselle, aged 22. The contract is signed in Montreal, in the house of Jean Gervaise, before the notary Bénigne Basset. The couple, whose marriage is celebrated 9 days later, settled in La Chine where Jean is born in September of the following year. The land does not yet belong to Gauthier, but in l67l, on the 31st of May, the act of concession is signed between Pierre Gauthier dit Saguingoira and the Sulpicians to whom Cavelier de La Salle had sold his seigneurie. By this act, Gauthier contracts to build a house in the village. In November of the same year, Gauthier and Jean Gervaise sell this hovel "of posts in the ground, its appurtenances and dependencies", the two entrepreneurs, to the merchants Charles LeMoyne and Jacques LeBer. The sale or transaction is concluded quietly. If he borrow money, as he does on 3 January 1678 from Jean-Baptiste Migeon, sieur de Bransat, Gauthier promises to reimburse the sum in money, wheat or with "good pelts". In l684, 7 children share the life of Charlotte Roussel and Pierre Gauthier who is tasked as guardian of the estates of Antoine Roy dit Desjardins and Julien Talus dit Vandamont, the last having killed the first because of adultery.

For the Gauthiers as for all inhabitants of the Montreal region, l689 is a sad year indeed, one of great tribulation. In La Chine, during the night between the 4th to the 5th of August, a massacre occurs, and among its victims and lost ones, we note the names of Pierre Gauthier and Charlotte Roussel. This family of eight children will now have to rely on Anne, born in 1676 and who married Jacques Denis dit Saint-Denis on 22 February l689.

For those who wish to stay in La Chine, life goes on, even though they have lost some folks. Charlotte Roussel has been killed during the first days after her capture but Gauthier, luckier, is not dead; in 1698, Jacques Denis accepts in his name a concession of sixty acres.

It is said that Gauthier is a "captive of the Iroquois, our enemy".

It is during this period that he is released. On l6 August l699, he is present at the marriage of his son Joseph to Clémence Jarry. The widower is also witness to the marriage of his daughter Marie to Alexandre Turpin, on 25 February l702. On the following year, he distributes his lands and belongings between his eight children because of the death of their mother. A lottery decides how the lands in Lachine are distributed. Most are sold the next day to Jean Messiot.

In September, Pierre Gauthier draws up his last will. He dies on 8 December l703, at the age of 74.

The Gauthier patronym

1/ What does the name mean?

Gautier has been the surname of jokesters and sometimes of woodsmen.

The Gauthier patronym is originated from the German "Waldhari"(Wald-Walden meaning " to govern" and Hari meaning "armed"). Many different Gauthiers settled in Quebec but not all have descendants today.

"Gauthier or Gautier, thus Gauthiez and many derivatives (Gautheron, Gauthreau, Gauthey, Gautron, Gautreau) and regional variations such as Galtier, Vauthier, Vautier, Walter (Alsace-Lorraine) Vautrin....

In Normandy, Gautier (and thus Gauthier) was often the surname given to lumbermen. It originated from the old Gallic name "Gaut" meaning forest".

GERMAIN GAUTHIER also called ST.GERMAIN (1647-1719)

By Armand Gauthier

THE ORIGIN

Germain Gauthier I, called St-Germain was born at Beaubec in the country of Bray in Normandy around 1647. He stated that he was 34 years old in the 1681 census. His father who was a weaver was also called Germain and his mother was Louise Viollard. The family was already living in Bray by the middle of the 16th century. On 14 march 1575, the prior of the abbey of Beaubec gave Stephen Gauthier, by an act passed before the notary of Rouen, a very long lease on the land of Balletiere.

The registers, unhappily, are very incomplete and they do not show form our Germain to Stephen. They open in 1505 and stop at 1598; then they resume in 1664. At the close of this era, the enumeration of baptisms, marriages and burials continues up to 1793, then it is interrupted again. There is, therefore, a gap of some 65 years in this period critical to the identification of near descendants of Germain Gauthier. By contrast, at the counting of 1664, there is mention of a number of Gautiers or Gauthiers, notably of a certain Antoine (Anthony) Gautier, deceased 16 October 1689 at the age of 87, who had given 50 pounds to the treasury of this church (Beaubec) for prayers for him. A bronze plaque attached to the wall of the said church makes statement about the founding of an annuity of 30 pounds made by the Honorable Antoine Gautier, merchant and ancient treasurer of this church.

The register indicates that many of the Gautiers were godfathers and godmothers, which proves that this family was well known and highly esteemed. It is remarkable that there were still Gautiers in this region of Normandy in 1975, in particular at Forges-les-Eaux where M. Alain Gautier and his old father lived

1. The country of Bray is a tiny verdant agricultural region situated at the borders of Normandy, Picardy and the Isle de France whose inhabitants devote themselves to the raising of cows and horses.

2. Or Viellard.

IN NEW FRANCE
According to all probability and on the advice of the historians Regis Roy and Gerard Machelosse, 3 Germain Gauthier came to Canada in 1665 as a soldier of the regiment of Carignan-Salieres, and he had been part of the company of Monsieur de Contracoeur. The latter, with 7 others formed the last contingent, which left from La Rochelle at the end of May, 1665 under orders of Colonel de Lalieres himself. The crossing was long and difficult and the troops arrived in Quebec only on 17 August. Montreal was the hot spot of the war of extermination which the Iroquois, were conducting against the French colonists, the eight companies holding out and returning fire without delay. The first ones who arrived in the middle of June had immediately been employed to construct the fort at Chambly, the first obstacle on the invasion route.

History has given us the story of the labors and expeditions of Carignans regiment in this land. The latter, they say, of half failures. It remains, however, that if this military intervention did not obtain the objective that had been set, to annihilate the Iroquois, it dampened considerably their warring ardor and raised the morale of the colonists who could henceforth hope for more peaceful days. But the most positive and long-lasting result of the coming of this regiment to Canada was the contribution of filling out of the population by those officers and soldiers who chose to remain here in the role of land clearer. This is what Germain Gauthier did.4

THE OBSCURE PERIOD

However, no traces can be found before 1677&What happened to him during the nine years following the disbanding? Did he return to France and then afterwards come back? It could be that, preferring the gun of the adventurer to the hatchet of the land clearer, he became, for a time, a scout in the forest. Who know?

HIS MARRIAGE

On 27 June 1677, Germain Gauthier appeared before M.Benigne Basset, the royal notary of the Isle de Montreal, and contracted marriage with Jeanne Beauchamp, daughter of Jacques (James) Beauchamp and Marie Dardenne. Assisting the future spouse (husband) were Jean-Baptiste Le Gardeur, squire, the said of Repentigny, Pierre Picard, Roch Thouin, Jean Letellier and Jean Le Brodeur, all inhabitants of the manor of Repentigny. On the side of the future wife the witnesses were Jacques Beauchamp and Marie Dardenne,

3 according to a personal communication of M.G. -Robert Gareau (588), Germain Gauthier, called St. Germain, was part of the 3rd contingent of Carignans regiment, company of St-Ours, not that of Contracoeur. M. Gareau based this assertion on the confirmation of Germain Gauthier, 21 September 1665, Notre Dame, Québec, p.41 of the register.

Her father and mother; Pierre Dardenne, her grandfather; Pierre Larrivee, her brother-in-law, husband of Denise Beauchamp, her sister; Jean Beauchamp, her paternal Uncle; Rene Dardenne, her maternal uncle; Franced Barbery, his wife; Francis Bau and jean Lafond also called Lafontaine.

The future spouses married according to the current rules at this time, that is to say, some joining of the goods and the Beauchamp parents allowing a transfer of the inheritance form them in advance up to the sum of 300 pounds payable in 5 equal annual installments. The contract was signed at Pointe-aux-trembles in the house of Jacques Beauchamp. (Basset, 27 June 1677)

As for the nuptial blessing, it was given to them less than a month later at Point-aux-Trembles in the home of Francis Bau who served for the celebration of the rite up to the blessing form the first chapel in the month of march, 1678. The event is recorded in these words in the first register of the parish of the holy Child Jesus:

The young bride was going to be 14 years old on the 30th of July of the same year, and Germain Gauthier was 30 years old. The Beauchamps and the Dardennes were among the authentic Rochelais come to the new Franc to the manor of Repentigny.

The two documents indicated above, the contract and the act of marriage off Germain Gauthier reveal that he was in 1667 a copy holder* of Jean-Baptiste Le Gardeur, Lord of Repentigny. Since when? It has not been possible up to now to establish that, the act of concession not having been found. It is quite possible that the land was ceded to him at the same time as that to 5 other tenant farmers in virtue of a contract received by the notary Thomas Frerot on 20 march, 1673 and where the names of the receivers did not appear. What is certain is that he makes mention or our man in Aveu and the census pro-

All sorts of cereals and vegetables. The woods on the land are a mixture of every species. The Iroquois had exterminated one of the inhabitants and for years had hampered its settlement and it was on this manor that the Marquis of Vaudreuil in 1691 completely defeated a party of islanders and caused all the nations to demand peace"

AT BOUCHERVILLE

You can see the beginnings of the manor of Repentigny were difficult and the attacks of the Iroquois surely contributed to creating and maintaining an atmosphere of insecurity. Now at the same time on the opposite bank of the St Lawrence, in front of Long-Point, another manor, Boucherville, was open for settlement. Its owner, Peter Boucher, worked actively to assure its establishment and its progress. Moreover, there was communication between the two groups of settlers. In 1687 or near, a missionary who at the beginning of the month was at Boucherville served the territory of Repentigny - those on the north bank of the river heard him speak of what had happened on the south bank. Finally among the first landholders of Boucherville was Peter Larrivee, brother-in-law of Germain Gauthier. Motives were not lacking for the latter to think that there would be advantages for him and his family to move to a spot that was safer and had a more promising future

Of copyholders, Germain Gauthier was in third place, that is to say after the lord of the manor and Peter Riviere. The paragraph which concerns him reads as follows: Germain Gauthier had 3 acres across the front and 20 deep, charged 3 pounds in silver and 3 capons for rent and a poll tax. (The Grant and listing of the land, fee and lordship of Repentigny: 1677) And the document continues with the enumeration of settlers to the number of 30 who comprised this manor.

It was on this site of the actual village of Repentigny that our ancestor first had house and home. The Company of New France had ceded the manor where he settled to Peter Le Gardeur on 16 April 1647. It measured 10 miles on the front and 15 deep then, and it remained without being cleared and without boundary changes until 1670, the year when it was divided between John-Baptiste Le Gardeur and his brother Charles de Villiers of La Chesnaye ended up saving as manor only the strip of land between the St Lawrence and Assumption Rivers. In 1670 he built himself a small country house there and it is beginning with that year that he probably began to give up some of the land. The Grant and listing of 1677 mentions, we have seen, 30 grantees but 4 years later at the census of 1681, there were only 22 households for a population of 140 people. The family of Gauthier was among this number. You can read in B. Sulte the following items: "Germain Gauthier 34 years old, Jeanne Beauchamp, wife 20*, Denise, daughter, 2; 2 rifles, 4 horned beasts, 11 acres of worth.

In spite of the brevity, these 3 lines give us some precious information. They tell us that Denise their oldest child was seen that day at Repentigny in 1679. Since the parish register does not mention her baptism, you can see the importance of this census item. In the second place it says that Germain Gauthier had 11 acres. Now in that year, 1681, of the 21 settlers who comprised the manor of Repentigny, 2 had 12 acres and 2 had 11. The 16 others for the most part had evidently less. You can reasonably conclude that having been advanced in clearing his grant, Germain Gauthier had been among the first to obtain land from Lord of Repentigny.

In spite of its small expanse, it was a beautiful manor, but it was subject to frequent incursions by the Iroquois. Here is what Gedeon de Catalogne wrote in 1712: "The coast (of the manor of Repentigny) is very beautifully smooth and adorned with many islands which produce in abundance.

*She was only 18, having been born on 30 July 1663. (It's a notation on the age of Jeanne Beauchamp.)
